Rustic Staten Island: from lake to ocean

Posted by & filed under Biking, Hiking, Staten Island.

This is a bike ramble though the mixed urban-rustic environment of Staten-Island, third largest yet least populated borough of New York City. I GPS tracked and photographed this trip with iPhone 3G. It starts in the Silver Lake Park and ends on the remote cape of Great Kills Park. The ramble goes via neat Howard Avenue passing St John’s University, Wagner College and spectacular view on the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge. Then, through the hole in a wire fence, it dives into the woods of the Staten Island Greenbelt (2,800 acres of forested hills containing an extensive system of connected trails). It goes by blue trail, passes over abandoned highway overpass, goes by ponds and wooden bridges of High Rock Park, switches to white trail, and ends at the remote beach of Great Kills Park. Sometimes your bike will carry you; sometimes you will carry your bike: some hills are steep and rocky. Besides, bikes are not allowed on trails marked “foot trail”. This half-biking-half-walking with the bike through hills and woods is a great workout. Beware of mosquitoes.
